DEFINITION OF TERMS

Like you, AFerry Ltd (formerly The Travel Gateway Ltd) hates jargon! Unfortunately, some technical phrases are occassionally unavoidable, so to help you cope, we have compiled this list of commonly used phrases relating to the travel industry and travel technology.

Travel Technology

Travel technology is a term used to describe applications of Information Technology in the travel, tourism and hospitality industry. Travel technology was originally associated with the computer reservations system of the airlines industry, but is now used more inclusively, incorporating the broader tourism sector and the hospitality industry. While travel technology includes the computer reservations system, it also represents a much broader range of applications. Entee Global Services develops and operates innovative web-based travel technology and is a part of the leading ecommerce travel technology, distribution and support 2morrow Group.

Travel Distribution

The process known as the "distribution channel" refers to chains of intermediaries passing a product down the chain to the next organization, for it to reach the consumer. A distributor may sell to retailers, and retailers to consumers. Direct and indirect channels may be used – i.e. hotels may sell their services directly, or through travel agents, tour operators, airlines, tourist boards, or web-based reservation systems. In the 21st Century, there is increased service integration, especially in the travel and tourism sectors, so that links now exist between ferries, railways, airlines, hotels and car rental services.

eCommerce

The term "eCommerce" refers to the online transaction of business, featuring linked computer systems of the vendor, host, and buyer. Electronic transactions involve the transfer of ownership or rights to use a good or service. Most people are familiar with business-to-consumer electronic business (B2C). Electronic commerce that is conducted between businesses is referred to as business-to-business or B2B. Electronic commerce that is conducted between businesses and consumers, on the other hand, is referred to as business-to-consumer or B2C. This is the type of electronic commerce conducted by companies such as AFerry.co.uk.

Dynamic packaging

Dynamic Packaging is a method that is becoming increasingly used in package holiday bookings that enables consumers to build their own package of ferries, trains or flights, along with accommodation, and car hire instead of a pre-defined package. This enables consumers to take advantage of current prices and get the best up-to-the-minute deals.

Support services

With regards to the ferry industry, the phrase "Support Services" refers to all aspects of the operation, excluding passport control, which take place off-ship. LCT Support Services provide telephone reservation support and email reservation support with multi-lingual capability; shore and ground handling services including security and stevedoring; and access to the world's largest travel distribution networks, all supported by our own innovative web-based technology and IP telephony.
